History: The Doonesbury-Class started as an idea for a Recon Cruiser in 2307, but after the Tomed Incident, and the signing of the Treaty of Algeron, the design was put on hold indefinitely. In 2338, with the success of the Royal Sovereign-Class Large Cruiser, two engineers, Seth Rollins (father of Ensign Rollins of the Starship Voyager), and Grure of Tellar, updated the Doonesbury design using aesthetics and systems developed for the Royal Sovereign, but the Design still wasn't accepted. In 2347, with further improvements, and greatly improved exploration and transport capability; - the design was OKed', and the prototype, USS Doonesbury, NX-52183, was completed on May 13th, 2350, with production commencing at a rate of 2-4 per year at Caravelia, Utopia Planitia and Aldebaran. Over a hundred were completed and had a minor profile, but still decent Cruisers.
Noteworthy Vessels/Service Records/Encounters: U.S.S Doonesbury; - Prototype, observed Cardassian fleet buildups and troop movements (2356-2366), U.S.S Villasaluna; - crewed mostly by Betazoids, Zaldans, Xelations, and Dolphins, often surveyed Class N and T Planets and ocean moons (2352-2422), U.S.S Halderfeld; - destroyed preventing hyper-flux crystal from falling into Dominion Hands (2375), U.S.S Santayana; - explored Beta Quadrant under the command of eventually centenarian Douglas Murphy (2362-2389)
